Winchline extensions are an important tool when you find yourself in a situation where your winchline will not reach your anchor point or you need extra length on your winchline to make an angle change in your winchline rigging. Although somewhat infrequently used, the winchline extension can make the difference between getting unstuck or not w/ the tools you have. Our philosophy for most winch-winchline rigging is to use less line on the winch & carry an extension for the times when you need the additional length. The reason is all winches are rated on the very first rope or wire cable layer. Meaning your typical 9,000 lbs. winch has 9,000 pounds of pulling power ONLY on the first layer. See below for more information. Our recommendation is getting winchline extensions w/ "Soft Eyes" for easier storage & easier rigging. The soft eyes have heavy duty polyester eye guards to protect the rope. NOTE: Only 3/8" extensions & winchlines are offered in colors other than blue. Orange color is consistent even though images appear to differ. We also offer 9/16" & 5/8" sizes for large vehicles; these may be custom & require a lead time. The following diagram was developed by Superwinch to help us better understand the physics & mechanical advantages of the winch. If 20-30 feet are pulled off the winch for a recovery, most winches will be sitting on or near the 4th layer of rope. This means our typical 9,000 lbs. winch has just over 5,000 lbs. pulling capacity. In contrast, if you are able to either pull more line off the winch or have a shorter winchline, you will be closer to the pulling Power Zone™, achieving the approximate 9,000 lbs. of pulling power. People willing to ride w/ only 80' or 100' of winchline will save some money on expensive synthetic, but be aware of the limitations of short winchlines if you don't have a buddy nearby.
